Description
Positioned over the microfilm case located just beyond the Circulation Desk is Gruppeās painting, "Distress". His years in Gloucester gave Gruppe a vivid awareness of the dangers the local fishermen faced. In the years between his arrival in Gloucester in 1925 and his death in 1978, over 300 fishermen died at sea.
In this painting, Gruppe presents a desperate effort of his neighbors to rescue men from a sinking vessel.
